Overview

The Convertible Concept

The CR:X board has been designed to be ridden in two distinctly different modes for varying conditions and race formats.

Twin Tip Mode

This setup allows the board to be used as a normal, bi-directional kiteboard. The board is designed to be used by kiteboarders of all skill levels: from beginners all the way up to twin tip racers. The twin tip mode is best suited for stronger winds, course racing or compact boardercross race formats.

Hydrofoil Mode

In this setup, the board is fitted with a hydrofoil package lifting the board and rider up above the water. Due to the efficiency of a hydrofoil this mode is ideal for light winds, upwind/downwind course racing and long distance races. The hydrofoil brings a higher level of excitement but also technicality to the CR:X package. Athletes need to have experience handling the board in twin tip mode, before progressing to the hydrofoil.

CR:X Convertible Board

The Board

The board is unique and progressive within kiteboarding as the first twin tip board to be truly convertible between twin tip and hydrofoil racing. The board has a moderate rocker line with a modern straight outline, suitable for the first time rider through to a top end racer. The stance widths and binding positions can be adjusted to accommodate a range of athlete weights and sizes. The board’s core is made from a sustainable Paulownia wood, with tough hard wearing ABS rails and a durable fibreglass laminate. The board has a stiff flex characteristic, ideal for both the twin tip or hydrofoil modes.

Hydrofoil

The CR:X foil package has been designed to promote progressive racing. The moderate aspect ratio wing is fast yet forgiving. The wing profile allows the first time foiler to easily lift up at low speeds, yet the wings have low enough drag that the athlete can drive the foil at speed around the race course.

Shims

A unique feature of the CR:X foil package is the ability to change the angle of attack of the rear wing. This is possible due to different shim sizes that may be adjusted based on the individual’s preferences. This allows a first time rider to increase the angle and provide more lift, making it easier to get foiling. As the rider’s skills progress they may reduce this angle thus reducing drag and increasing top end speed and performance.

In very simple terms the more -ve AOA on the rear wing the easier the foil is to ride but the slower the top speed with body weight lighter riders need less -ve AOA than heavier riders to have a stable ride at a given speed.
So:
Lighter, more experienced riders looking for higher top speeds = lower -ve AOA (-1 or -2)
Heavier, less experienced riders looking for more stability = higher -ve AOA (-2 or -3)
Also note that higher top FOIL speed does not necessarily mean faster around a race course, as stability – esp off the wing – can allow a rider to maintain a higher average if they are in tune with there equipment.
Wings

The CR:X foil wings are molded from a super tough carbon composite, ensuring they are durable and hard-wearing. The consistency of the construction of each wing is critical, as the equipment must be the same for each athlete. To achieve this the wings are molded under very high pressure, providing a high quality and consistent finish.

Mast & Fuselage

Both the mast and fuselage are made from aircraft grade 6061 aluminium that is stiff, lightweight, durable and affordable, in comparison to a full carbon piece. The Titanium bolts reduce effects of corrosion. All bolts in the CR:X package use the same compact hex tool provided in the CR:X kit, removing the need to travel with a full range of tools and spares.

In hydrofoil mode the board can be fitted with either a central two-strap setup for freeriding or a three-strap racing setup. The footstraps are comfortable on the feet due to the premium neoprene used in construction. The high grip layer on the inside of the strap increases the connectivity with the board at speed, improving control and handling characteristics whilst foiling.

David Kay

NeilPryde Board & Foil Designer

With over 15 years of board building experience and multiple world cup winning board designs, DK adds another feather to his cap with the creation of the world’s first Kiteracing One-design Class.

DK’s passion for watersports drives his every waking moment. Those that know him personally know that he has very high standards when it comes to the implementation of a design concept. His desire to create a pure design process is insatiable — from the software he uses to his understanding of materials and the way they interact.

DK has a very strong working relationship with our kite designer. Their partnership on this project has produced an entirely new concept of convertibility; the versatility of the CR:X design is a credit to them both.

We hope you enjoy the final result.
